HTML5's performance inconsistencies a challenge to... →
Ah, HTML5… It’s 1999 all over again. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, a web browser should be more like a television set. They must support and implement standards equally or what is the point. Imagine that your tv displayed certain channels in black and white because it didn’t understand how to display certain broadcast signals.

Flash Player 11 gets Unreal →
Love it or hate it, Adobe Flash isn’t going anywhere. It’s just evolving. And this is a big step in it’s evolution. Epic Games the makers of Gears of War series and the Unreal Engine which powers dozens of AAA games, announced that Unreal Engine 3 now has support for Flash Player 11. Adobe and Epic demoed a Flash based version of Unreal Tournament 3 during Adobe MAX.

Your development team are not plumbers, don't... →
Sometimes I come across articles in other industries that I think relate directly back to things I’m going through and this is one of those. At least in my experience, I think it relates well to the way digital advertising agencies treat their developers – as plumbers.
Forget that it’s written about gaming. I’m no software engineer; I’m not that smart. And I’m not...

Pepsi shows lack of respect for their audience
Here is the final lockup for a banner ad for Pespi Throwback that I ran across on Kotaku.com. Can you see the problem with the image?
No? Take a look a the cardboard cutout of the can a “designer” Photoshoped into the girls hand. I don’t care that the ad uses stock imagery; the image fits the throwback idea. But some marketing genius demanded that she be holding a Pepsi and...

HOW TO STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST (AND 9 OTHER THINGS... →
It’s annoying that he was only 10 when Jurassic Park came out. I was visiting my parents after college and went with my mom because no one else would go with her to see it.
But, I like the rest of what is said.

Chrome Drops Support for H.264 Codec
Haven’t posted in a while but this caught my attention.
As if issues surrounding video on the web and HTML5 weren’t complicated enough, Google has thrown another wrench in the quest for web “standards” by dropping H.264 support in favor of WebM and Theora codecs. I don’t pretend to care for one over the other, in fact I do most of my work using Adobe Flash anyway,...

Firstborn 2010 Mustang Case Study
Check out the case study for Firstborn’s 2010 Mustang customizer.
The customizer application for Ford’s 2010 Mustang came out some time ago. Besides all the hundreds of options, a visitor could choose any color (up to 16 milion) for the car. That for me was the best part; I wasn’t limited to the 9 colors that Ford choose as the colors for 2010. It was and is a car customizing...

Apple to announce AdKit mobile ad platform... →
Since Apple bought Quattro Wireless, I’ve wondered how they were going to put Quattro’s mobile ad network to work. It looks like the answer will come Thursday when Apple announces a mobile iAd/AdKit framework for the iPhone OS.
For those who want an easier way to monetize their applications, it’s great news. I expect that Apple has realized a mobile ad platform that can not only...

Building Framework Independent Code Libraries →
Grant Skinner writes about creating framework independent libraries. Any one who writes ActionScript has run into this. You find a great code library to help you solve a problem you are having, but when you try to implement it, you discover it has a ton of Flex dependencies. Maybe you can download flex framework and just include those, but if the library uses Flex specific features like the...

Nestle (or their lawyers) show a lack of understanding of what it means to be social. via @bigspaceship
It’s disapointing that Nestle would go down this path rather than try to engage in a real dialog with critics. Regardless, I still love me a batch of warm Toll House Cookies and milk.
Update:

One Small Step for Papermate
I saw a commercial during the Olympic coverage today for Papermate’s NEW Biodegradeable pens (http://www.papermategreen.com/). I think they sidesteped a large part of the issue: the disposable pen.
My question for Papermate: Why does the pen need to be biodegradeable? Why not simply stop making disposable pens? I’m sure Papermate will be comended in some circles for their green...

Show it in a FancyBox
Just finished up a site that required some work integrating Fancybox with Flash. When I first set out, I checked out some forums for some information; I got a little here and a little there. One thing kept popping up was that people were having problems calling FancyBox from Flash using AS3. So, here I present a working demo of Fancybox being called from Flash using AS3.
Please note, the demo...

The Future of Flash
I like the HTML5 vs. Flash discussion. It’s fun to read both sides of the argument and frustrating to watch comments turn into flame wars. I have been working with Flash for over 10 years. I love that it allows me to create a great experience without all the hassles of worrying about whether it will work on such and such browser.
Here are what I think are two, somewhat even, discussions about...

Apple's iPad: For what Audience?
52weeksofux:
After years of speculation, Apple finally released a tablet computer yesterday called the iPad. There was fanfare! There was rejoicing!
There was also much criticism: everything from it doesn’t have a camera or USB port to it doesn’t support Flash or HDMI out to it doesn’t let you multi-task. In 24 hours we have dozens of reasons why the iPad will fail in the marketplace.
But...
